Intheprefacetothe1989volumewhichborethesimpletitleofCalixarenes,I
wrotethatsciencecomprisesamarvelousmosaicofindividualpieces–some
large,somesmall,someofcosmicimportance,someofminorconsequence.
Eachhasashape,color,structure,andsetofcharacteristicsthatdistinguishit
fromallothersandmakeitunique.Iwentontosaythatthebookdealtwith
onesuchpiecewhichfitssomewhereinthemiddlebetweentheseboundaries,
beingmediuminsizeandmodestinimportancebutapiecethatboastsamore
thanhumdrumhistorythatisacquiringaninterestingpatinawiththepassage
oftime.Icommentedthatoneimportantpurposeofthebookwastoprovide
atimelysurveyofthechemistryofthemolecularbasketscalledcalixarenes,a
surveythatmightserveasaspringboardforresearchersinterestedinexpanding
thisdomainofsupramolecularchemistry.
LittledidIrealizein1989,whentherewererelativelyfewworkersinthefield,
thatonlynineyearslateritwouldbenecessarytowriteasequeltothisfirst
volumetobringthingsuptodate.Fromtheoutsetofwritingthatsecond
volume,however,itwasclearthatitwasfruitlesstotrytoincludeinarelatively
shortbookallofthenewinformationcomingfromthepublicationsofthe
dozensofresearchgroupsthathadenteredthefieldintheinterim.Conse-
quently,CalixarenesRevisited,publishedin1998,representedajudicious
selectionfromtheliteraturebutinnowayacompleteanddefinitivecompen-
dium.Today,thepaceofpublicationcontinuesunabated,furthercompound-
ingtheproblemofwritingaconciseoverviewofthefield.Whathashappened
insteadisthatbooksandlongreviewsarebeingpublishedthatprovide
completeanddefinitivetreatmentsofvariousindividualsegmentsofcalixarene
chemistry.Totakeadvantageofthesescholarlyefforts,thepresentbook
containsfrequentreferencestoappendicesA–Dwhichlistthesecontributions
(abbreviatedinthetextasApndxfollowedbythespecificationofthe
particularappendixandtheitemnumberwithinthatappendix–e.g.A-2,
p.89;C-9;etc.).Toreadandassimilatealltheinformationinthislonglistof
reviewsisadauntingtaskforayounginvestigatornotyetfamiliarwith
calixarenechemistryandmightdeterhim/herfromenteringthefield.The
aimofthisthirdvolume,therefore,reiteratesthatofthefirstvolume,viz.to
provideasurveyofcalixarenechemistrytoserveasanintroductiontothe
longerandmorein-depthcoverageprovidedbytheseothersources.
